All-Church Watch: Sweet Magnolia on Netflix

It’s endearing and inspiring. Sweet Magnolias premiered on Netflix in May, and its creator Sheryl Anderson is a faithful Lutheran Christian and an active member of Mount Olive Lutheran Church (ELCA) in Santa Monica, CA. The show takes place in the fictional town of Serenity, South Carolina, and centers on the lifelong friendship of three women, all members of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church. The series shows the women in worship together, and the congregation’s pastor is a supporting character, based on qualities that Anderson admires in ELCA pastors. Anderson’s faith is evident in her work, including themes of grace, redemption, and community. The characters are living their faith as part of who they are. Whereas Christianity in the media is often shown negatively, this series intentionally shows the church how Anderson sees it – as loving and accepting of everyone. The series’ 10 episodes are getting good reviews, too: 4.8 out of 5 stars by 1,950 reviewers.

On Tuesday, October 27, at 6:00pm, gather with Pastor Matt and others over supper to discuss the series and key themes. Watch season one in advance. Plan for 75 minutes together. The Grove Market will cater for us, so RSVP by October 20 to the church office. Seating is limited.
