The Lenten season offers a time for reflection and repentance. Some people choose to give up a bad habit, reminding themselves of Jesus’ temptations in the wilderness. Some choose to pick up a good habit, embracing the six weeks as a time to grow closer to God. One way to deepen faith is through daily reading and reflection. This Lent the people of St. John’s are reading the book Journeying through Lent with Luke: Daily Meditations by Nancy Koester and are invited to a small group experience that will draw them closer to God and one another.
Each of the 47 devotions (one for each day during Lent, including Sundays and Holy Week) is freestanding, but the themes link groups of devotions together, lending depth and continuity to them. Vivid word pictures, crisp retelling of texts, and creative allegory spark delight in the beauty of Luke's Gospel and a desire to follow Christ. Each meditation focuses on a key point from the reading in Luke and offers excellent questions for small-group discussion or for individual reflection, as well as prayer.
Exploring the major themes found in Luke's gospel, Koester shows us how to live in this world—in vocation and compassion, worship and prayer. Each week will focus on a theme:
Week 1: Praying (February 17-23)
Week 2: Teaching (February 24-March 2)
Week 3: Healing (March 3-9)
Week 4: Forgiving (March 10-16)
Week 5: Believing (March 17-23)
Week 6: Daring (March 24-30)
Week 7: Dying and Rising (March 31-April 4)
