Community Read: The Great Divorce

  • St. John's Lutheran Church 312 South Third Street Evansville, WI (map)

C.S. Lewis (1898-1963) was a British writer, a lay theologian, and a professor of English Literature at Oxford and Cambridge Universities. He is the author of more than 30 books, including the famed Chronicles of Narnia. Lewis grew up in the church but fell away from his faith for many years. He was repelled by the hymns and the poor quality of sermons. But key friends in his life, including author J.R.R. Tolkien, helped to bring about his dramatic conversion. Upon his return to the church, he wrote and spoke about Christianity in a compelling way. Because of this, he is regarded by many as one of the most influential Christian apologists of his time, speaking to the heart and mind of skeptics. (Check out Shadowlands with Anthony Hopkins and Debra Winger for a 1993 film based on his life.) Lewis became an upstanding Anglican, and Christians of many denominations read and cherish his words.

His book The Great Divorce (1945) has nothing to do with marriage. It is a classic Christian allegorical tale about a bus ride from hell to heaven. It is an extraordinary meditation upon grace and judgment that just might change the way we think about good and evil.

On Sunday, November 14, at 7:00pm we will gather to discuss The Great Divorce. The book is available on Amazon and from the public library in print, CD, and Hoopla. To help with our planning, we ask you to RSVP to the church office (office@stjohns-lc.org) by Wednesday, November 10.
